Those under the age of 18 will no longer be able to purchase cough suppressants like NyQuil and Robitussin under a bill signed Friday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The new law, which takes effect in days, targets over-the-counter drugs that contain dextromethorphan. If it will save one life, it's worth it. Cincinnati Drug and Poison Information Center has averaged about cases a year of dextromethorphan poisoning during the past five years, said Robert Goetz, senior clinical toxicologist with the center.
Synthetic marijuana and bath salts make up a higher portion of cases, Goetz said. Symptoms of an overdose can include loss of coordination, numbness, nausea, high blood pressure and, if taken with decongestants, brain damage. Goetz described it as moderately toxic. The sponsor of the bill to ban underaged cough syrup purchases, however, said abuse of cough medication is prevalent in his area. DXM is an ingredient in over 70 medications. In small doses, DXM is just a cough suppressant which does not pose any risks for serious side effects.
DXM is not even a controlled substance. However, DXM does affect the brain. For this reason, excessive amounts of DXM can bring about hallucinations and euphoria. The effects of a large DXM dose are actually similar to the effects of PCP , an illegal and very hazardous hallucinogen. Additionally, the combination of a large dose of DXM with acetaminophen, alcohol, or antidepressants may harm the liver and cause heart attacks, seizures, and in some cases, even death. In summary, drinking NyQuil to have a good time may be legal, but it is absolutely not safe.
